Our Fredonia FCCLA members had an unforgettable couple of days exploring Washington, D.C.! They visited the historic grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, navigated the Metro, cheered on the Washington Nationals at a Major League Baseball game, and enjoyed great meals at The Cheesecake Factory and Kura Revolving Sushi Bar.
One of the highlights of the trip was unexpectedly running into Fredonia alumna Ashleigh (Surber) George, Vice President of Project Management at Oracle. Ashleigh took a few moments to visit with our chapter and shared that she still uses many of the leadership, communication, and workplace skills she learned through FCCLA in her career today.
Experiences like these make the National Leadership Conference even more meaningful, connecting students with opportunities and reminders of where FCCLA can take them.

The week leading up to the KSHSAA Summer Moratorium was filled with outstanding effort and commitment from our student-athletes. Our coaches saw countless athletes stepping up and making the most of every workout, making the week's Game Changer selection one of the toughest yet.
After plenty of discussion, one athlete stood out.
Congratulations to Mathew Packett for earning last week's Game Changer recognition! Your dedication to getting better have not gone unnoticed.
Keep setting the standard, Mathew!

We wanted to share an important update regarding student cell phone use for the upcoming school year. During the 2026 legislative session, the Kansas Legislature passed House Bill 2299, which takes effect in July. The new law will prohibit students from possessing or using personal communication devices during the school day. This includes cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, headphones, and similar electronic devices, including during lunch periods and passing times.
While this requirement is similar to practices we have already implemented at our school, the new state mandate will require some adjustments to our current procedures. Certain exemptions will apply for students with accommodations through IEPs or 504 plans.
Our administrative team is already working to develop procedures that will support a smooth and successful transition for students, staff, and families. In addition, the Board of Education will soon consider policy updates necessary to align with the new state requirements.
As we move closer to the start of the school year, we will continue to provide updates and additional information regarding expectations and implementation.
We appreciate your patience, understanding, and partnership as we prepare for these changes. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact a building administrator.
Thank you for your continued support of USD #484!
