Think back to when you were in school. Think about the classrooms, the schedules, the classes, the system. What significant changes have our schools undergone since the beginning of public education as we know it? Well the time for change starts this year. Many Kansas school districts, with support from KSDE, are beginning a process called Redesign in their communities. The goals of the Redesign are to increase student success in our district and make education more connected to the 21st century. This process and the outcome of our redesign will be driven by teachers, community, and families in the district. What makes this process exciting is the “what if”s can now be brought to life in our schools.
KSDE has established four main themes of concentration for schools undergoing the Redesign process. These themes will drive where schools should look to improve and grow. The themes include personalized learning, project-based learning, social-emotional learning, and more immersion with parents and community. Our district is excited and inspired with these themes to try new things in our classrooms to enhance the learning experience in Fredonia. Now is not the time to live in our comfort zones, although sometimes that is the easiest thing to do. But we know that real learning and growth comes from trying new things, failing, and learning from those failures. We can no longer be afraid of risk, but instead, using those attempts at learning as a path to bigger and better things.
Now is the time! Tell us your crazy ideas. Step out of your comfort zone. Explore a new idea. Reach for the stars! We have a chance to design a school system that will make our students more successful than current practices allow. The Redesign Team in Fredonia is ready for this journey and are happy to answer questions and hear ideas from the community and our families.
